Synopsis
THE LEGENDARY LIBERACE showcases the pianist’s versatile style and virtuosity – from classical to pop, country to boogie-woogie – with excerpts from his famous 1950s TV series and from 1970s and ‘80s television specials. The program highlights some of Liberace’s most loved songs including The Sabre Dance, Beer Barrel Polka, Malaguena, Three Little Fishes, There’ll Be Some Changes Made, April in Portugal, Humoresque, The Old Piano Roll Blues, How Much is that Doggie in the Window, The 12th Street Rag, (A surprising duet!), It’s Impossible, a “Chopin” style version of Chopsticks and much more.
Also included is a Liberace tribute to his beloved mother, I Want a Girl Just Like the Girl that Married Dear Old Dad; and On The Sunny Side of the Street, featuring Mr. Showmanship tap dancing in a top hat and tails. From his classical repertoire, Liberace performs Beethoven’s Minuet in G, dressed as the composer and accompanied by couples dancing in period clothing; Liszt’s Concerto in A Major, and 14th Hungarian Rhapsody, and Tchaikovsky’s Concerto in B Flat Minor.
Jo Ann Castle, star pianist of The Lawrence Welk Show, and a longtime friend and admirer of Liberace, hosts this PBS special from the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas –surrounded by the many pianos, automobiles, costumes, jewelry and other items collected by the colorful artist.
